Waltz Activates Minnesota National Guard After a Cyberattack on Saint Paul

Governor Tim Walz has ordered an increase in the National Guard of the state, in retaliation to a cyberattack on Saint Paul, the capital of Minnesota. However, the nature of the cyberattack has not yet been revealed by city officials, the July 25 intrusion is still interfering with several public services and local activities.
With an estimated population of more than 300,000 individuals, Saint Paul is one of the largest cities in the United States and among the most up to date in a string of massive places that are targeted by ransomware gangs as well as hackers in the past few years.
 

On Tuesday, Walz gave a statement that the “magnitude and complexity” of the attack proved to be higher than the ability of the town to cope with the aftermath, and therefor he authorized the cyber forces of National Guard at the request of the city in order to help Saint Paul in overcoming from the cyberattack.

 

In an effort to “ensure continuity of vital services and the safety and security of Saint Paul residents,” Walz announced that the National Guard will assist.

 

According to Saint Paul Mayor Melvin Carter during a news conference on Tuesday, the city locked down its government product and services, in an attempt to rein in the attackers, resulting in a Wi-Fi outage all over the city.

 

Carter proceeded on to clarify that despite the fact that the city does not maintain an extensive amount of data regarding about those who live there, there was a chance that information about city workers had been compromised.
