xAI, which is run by Elon Musk, has put an older version of its AI model Grok on the open source website Hugging Face. These are the model weights which were implemented to shape Grok 2.5.
Musk posted on X:
“The @xAI Grok 2.5 model, which was our best model last year, is now open source.”
He also added that Grok 3 “will be made open source in about 6 months”. As stated by AI engineer Tim Kellogg, the Grok license is “custom with some anti-competitive terms.”
Grok, which is an increasingly popular feature on X which was recently merged with xAI, has caused an extensive amount of controversy this year. Especially since the chatbot started to grow obsession on conspiracy theories about the “white genocide,” displayed uncertainties about the actual number of individuals who lost their lives throughout the Holocaust, along with describing itself as “MechaHitler.” As a result, xAI posted its system prompts on GitHub.
Furthermore, despite Musk’s claims that the most recent iteration, Grok 4, is a “maximally truth-seeking AI,” it seems to check Musk’s social media accounts before responding to contentious queries.
