As regional tensions continue and global competition with China heats up, the United States(US) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have decided to expand their cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), according to officials at their first joint working group meeting in Washington.

Under the US-UAE AI Acceleration Partnership, senior officials from both nations convened their first interagency working group meeting in Washington on March 26, according to the State Department.

UAE Minister of Investment Mohamed Al Suwaidi and US Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg co-chaired the meeting. Attendees included representatives from important US departments and UAE organizations.

Artificial intelligence is quickly changing the world economy and spurring fresh growth, according to the State Department. It is a top priority for both nations.

It stated that even though the Gulf region is the state of unrest, the commitment is still in place. US digital infrastructure is already getting tons of investments from UAE businesses.

Washington also reiterated its pledges. It stated, the conditions of AI agreement are still in effect. This includes, subject to security regulations, UAE access to cutting-edge AI chips made in the US.

The UAE-based company G42 made progress, according to US authorities. According to them, its regulatory structure, and is the “gold standard” for handling sensitive technology.

According to US House Speaker Mike Johnson, sustaining US leadership in AI and competing internationally—particularly with China—requires reliable allies.

Both parties committed to strengthening their collaboration on regulatory harmonization, investor screening, and export controls. There will be more technical discussions.

In accordance with the State Department, the timing of the meeting amid Gulf concerns highlightes how much both governments value their long-term commitment to the cooperation.
