Microsoft is Removing Copilot from Windows 11

By

Microsoft has started to take the Copilot branding off of Notepad in Windows 11. They are replacing it with a more neutral name while keeping the AI features that are already there.

In the most recent Notepad preview update, the Copilot menu has been renamed “writing tools.” The UI doesn’t mention Copilot anymore, but the features are still the same. The update also shows that the brand is moving toward being more generic by replacing the Copilot icon with a pen icon.

Additionally, Microsoft deleted references to AI from the Notepad options menu. Rather then being called as AI tools, options to enable or disable these functions are now called “Advanced features.”

Notepad version 11.2512.28.0 at the moment is accessible to Windows Insiders. As part of the rollout, the users with this version will see revised labelling as well as interface modifications.

The upgrade represents larger decision of Microsoft to reduce Copilot branding throughout Windows 11, even though the AI features are still present. Users can still turn off AI capabilities in the app settings if they would rather not use them.
