Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are vying to provide businesses with the resources they need to build these automated tiny assistants. Agentic AI is the IT industry’s newest success story. In order to assist companies in building their own agents that utilise OpenAI’s models, OpenAI has upgraded its agents software development toolkit (SDK) with several new capabilities.
One of the new features of the SDK is sandboxing, which enables the agents to function in controlled computer environments. This is crucial because, because agents can be unpredictable at times, using them completely unsupervised can be dangerous.
Agents can operate in a segregated manner within a specific workspace using the sandbox integration, accessing files and code exclusively for specific tasks while maintaining the overall integrity of the system.
According to the firm, the new SDK also gives developers an in-distribution harness for frontier models, enabling those agents to operate with files and authorised tools in a workspace. (The term “harness” in agent development refers to an agent’s components other than the model it runs on.
Companies can frequently deploy and test agents running on frontier models—which are thought to be the most sophisticated, all-purpose models available—by using an in-distribution harness.
OpenAI product team member Karan Sharma told TechCrunch:
“The main goal of this launch is to make our current Agents SDK compatible with all of these sandbox providers”
This, along with the new harness features, should enable users “to go build these long-horizon agents using our harness and with whatever infrastructure they have,” he stated.
These “long-horizon” jobs are typically thought of as more complicated, multi-step undertakings. The new harness and sandbox features are initially being released in Python, with TypeScript support scheduled for a subsequent release. OpenAI stated that it will continue to enhance the Agents SDK over time.
Additionally, the business stated that it is looking to provide more agent features to TypeScript and Python, such as code mode and subagents.
