For a brief while, PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers can download a 2019 Game of the Year contender for free. More precisely, before this seven-year-old release gets deleted from each tier’s library, subscribers to these two tiers have until May 19 to download and view it. There is no assurance that it will ever come back after this.
The good news is that a mainline playthrough may finish the game in roughly ten to fifteen hours. In the meantime, adding side content only takes around 25 hours. Therefore, PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium customers have ample time to finish the game before it expires, but if you only have a few hours to spare each week, you should start now.
The game in question is the 2019 sci-fi action-adventure game Control from Remedy Entertainment. At the time, it was a brand-new intellectual property, but a sequel called Control Resonant, which is scheduled for release this year, has turned it into a franchise.
In 2025, it even received a multiplayer spin-off dubbed FBC: Firebreak, but sadly, it fell far short of the calibre of the original game. It was indeed one of 2025’s failures. Many people are unaware that the game is set in the same universe as other Remedy Entertainment franchises, like Alan Wake.
When Control was released on August 27, 2019, it received a Metacritic range of 82 to 85, which isn’t the best range of scores, but it was among the best. The bizarre game received eight nominations at The Game Awards at the end of the year, including Game of the Year.
In the meantime, it took home the Best Art Direction award. All of this roughly corresponds to its 4.38 out of 5 user rating on the PlayStation Store, where it typically retails for $40. However, this PS Plus availability is limited to the Ultimate Edition, which includes its two expansions and took the place of the normal edition on the digital shopfront.
PS4 users are not eligible for this promotion, however PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers are. Control Ultimate Edition is available for free download on PS4 in addition to PS5 if you have PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium. However, PS4 users can only play it until May 19, much like PS5 users.
