Fox McCloud’s role in the Super Mario Galaxy movie turned out to be a hint of what was to come, as Nintendo recently revealed the first new Star Fox game in ten years. The game, simply named Star Fox, will be released on June 25th.

Nintendo claims that it is “based” on the iconic space shooter Star Fox 64, but with improved graphics and revamped characters. It basically sounds like a modern version of the game, same level layout. This game looks really modern on the surface, with highly detailed characters, like a very realistic Slippy Toad. There is still chatter on-ship, yes. Apart from the flying ships there will be a few other vehicles to operate, such as a submarine.

The Star Fox remake’s new four-on-four dogfighting multiplayer mode can be played online and mouse controls are new, too. Most surprisingly, there are realistic character avatars that can be used by gamers while playing online. Nintendo describes the features as “An interactive avatar that mirrors your expressions and movements in GameChat.” But if you’re looking for a more retro experience, the game does support the N64 controller.

Nintendo’s website states that a physical copy of the game will cost $59.99 and a digital copy will cost $49.99.

The announcement coincides with Nintendo’s somewhat limited Switch 2 portfolio for the remainder of 2026. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Rhythm Heaven Groove, Splatoon Raiders, and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave are the only first-party games scheduled aside from Star Fox.
