Sony Still Unsure About the Price of PlayStation 6

Rumors about the price as well as debut date for the future PlayStation 6 had been circulating before, however Sony has yet to decide, as was revealed in a recent investor call.

Hiroki Totoki, president and CEO of Sony, responded that the business has not yet determined when or how much the PlayStation 6 will cost when asked about the status of the next-generation platform.

He said during Sony’s financial call:

“Looking at the current circumstances, the memory price is also expected to be very high FY 2027, because there will still be a shortage of supply.

We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices. So we would like to really observe and follow the situation.”

Sony isn’t the only console maker struggling with pricing. The rumor mill isn’t able to say much at this stage of the Switch 2’s lifecycle when it comes to Nintendo’s next console launch, but there has been talk of a potential price increase for the Nintendo Switch 2, a problem compounded by waning sales in the US. Xbox Helix is expected to be sold for around $1,000 once it hits the market.

Sony says it’s still up in the air on PlayStation 6 timing and pricing as the company weighs higher memory costs and potential supply pressure beyond FY2027. This means that participants don’t have a price floor to anchor their expectations or a target to prepare for.

Sony expenses and memory pricing

The major issue is the ongoing shortage along with the increasing prices for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) as well as other advanced RAM components that AI data centers depend on. Bloomberg reported back in February 2026 that Sony is seriously considering delays in order to secure enough supply without compromising performance targets.

MST International analyst David Gibson had already cautioned that there could be more pressure on fiscal 2027, potentially pushing a full launch into 2028. Higher memory costs mean higher production costs and higher Bill of Materials costs, which would strain the next console’s finances before Sony has even decided on a launch schedule,Totoki explained.

He continued by saying that Sony has purchased the quantity of materials required for the remainder of 2026 and has somewhat agreed on the pricing. However, he stated that the firm has not yet made an official decision regarding the timing or price of the PS6 due to the uncertainty surrounding the impending component issue.

Although Sony did not offer an explanation for the price increases beyond “the global economic landscape,” it has generally been assumed that rising DRAM prices are to blame for the PS5’s recent significant price increase.

Rumored Features and Specs

Leaks and reliable stories provide an enticing picture of the PS6, even though nothing is officially confirmed. With specialized neural processing units for upscaling, frame creation, and in-game help features, the unique AMD silicon is anticipated to place a strong emphasis on AI acceleration.

Sony has a solid track record in this area, and backward compatibility with PS5 and possibly PS4 games is seen as almost certain.

Why It Makes Strategic Sense to Delay

It seems intentional to prolong the PlayStation 5’s longevity. Strong sales and a large game library have been enjoyed by the PS5, and many fans have been pleased with the mid-generation update offered by the PS5 Pro model. Sony can avoid the expensive overlap that happens when new hardware is released while demand for the old generation is still high by postponing the PS6.

Additionally, it allows the business more time to improve hardware specs and obtain essential parts at fair costs. In the three months ending March 31, Sony sold roughly 1.5 million PlayStation 5 systems, bringing the total number of machines sold to 93.7 million.
